Joined by a small but fierce group of beer lovers, we performed the second step of the\u00a0<em>\u201cWhat if ReAle was born in\u2026\u201d<\/em>\u00a0project! This year\u2019s guest was\u00a0<strong>Andreas Gaenstaller<\/strong>, a great German brewer who came to visit us with his wife<strong>\u00a0Manuela<\/strong>\u00a0from<strong>\u00a0Bamberg\u00a0<\/strong>(you can see them in the picture together with our brewer Andrea). Those who attended the party could taste his fantastic beers and they know what we are talking about! So, here you can find some more details about<strong>\u00a0ReAlt<\/strong>, that is\u00a0<strong><em>What if ReAle was born in\u2026 Bamberg!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The idea, as we already explained, is the following:\u00a0 in special occasion \u2013 like this one \u2013 we will brew an alternative version of our beloved\u00a0<a title=\"Reale\" href=\"https:\/\/birradelborgo.it\/en\/birre\/scheda\/4\/reale\">ReAle<\/a>, immagining how it could have been if it was born in another place in the world. We will determine ingredients or tecniques in consequence and we will\u00a0<strong>\u201cdress it up\u201d every time in a different way<\/strong>, always leaving easily recognizable the original style. So, this year it was the turn of\u00a0<strong>Germany<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Bamberg\u2019s most famous beer is\u00a0<em><strong>Rauchbier<\/strong><\/em>, of course, but we didn\u2019t want to repeat ourselves with a smoked beer as we made for\u00a0<a title=\"Reale in Kilt\" href=\"https:\/\/birradelborgo.it\/en\/birre\/scheda\/34\/reale_in_kilt\">\u00a0Reale in Kilt<\/a>. So,\u00a0<strong>Andreas e Andrea<\/strong>, our head-brewer, imagined a beer that could be a good mix between our\u00a0<strong>Reale<\/strong>\u00a0and an\u00a0<strong>Altbier<\/strong>, another very interesting German style.\u00a0<strong><em>Altbiers<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are dark, high-fermentation beers originaly born in the\u00a0<a>D\u00fcsseldorf<\/a>\u00a0whose name \u2013 meaning\u00a0<em>old beer\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; comes from the old brewing method that is still used nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, in our case it was only a \u201cloose interpretation\u201d to vary the classic recipe of our\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Reale.<\/strong>This is what Andrea says about the new beer he brewed with Adreas:\u00a0<em>\u201cwe lowered the initial\u00a0<strong>plato degree<\/strong>\u00a0of one unit to be closer to the classic Alt values, as well as for the\u00a0<strong>ABV<\/strong>. The beer\u00a0<strong>color<\/strong>\u00a0will stay the same as Reale, but in this case the\u00a0<strong>amber tone<\/strong>\u00a0is obtained using\u00a0<strong>a mix of malts<\/strong>\u00a0with less caramel malts than the starting recipe, to get less toffee notes and a more intense malty taste.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>To the nose<\/strong>, beside the classic citrus aromas given by the American hops that one can find in Reale, there are the typical\u00a0<strong>herbal and fruity notes of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>German hops<\/strong>, like the Spalter Select. Moreover, to make the beer aroma even more complex, we added a modern\u00a0<a title=\"Gruit\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gruit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gruit<\/a>\u00a0(as it was common to do for Altbier in the past) made by a<strong>\u00a0mix of spices and leaves<\/strong>, among wich one can clearly detect coriander and lemon myrtle. Also for the\u00a0<strong>fermentation\u00a0<\/strong>we changed something: tough we always made it at high temperatures, we\u00a0 used a<strong>\u00a0German yeast\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>that will then be kept for a long time at a lower temperature as it happens for Lager beers, to refine and improve the final aroma of our beer\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Can\u2019t wait to taste the final result?
